2019 Art of the Southwest Wall Calendar

Description: Many artists have found inspiration in the majestic natural landscapes of the American Southwest. The images in this calendar include a variety of artistic styles spanning the late nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries. Some artists, including E. Martin Hennings, Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, Victor Higgins, and Gustave Baumann, resettled in New Mexico and were active members of the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies. Others traveled throughout the West. California Impressionist Edgar Payne painted the Sierra Nevada as well as the deserts and canyons of Arizona and New Mexico. Maynard Dixon lived mostly in California, but much of his work depicts remote desert landscapes. Marsden Hartley lived in New Mexico for only a few years, yet he applied his Modernist approach to a series of southwestern paintings finished after he left the state. The works included here reside in the collection of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum.
