Alma Thomas, inspired by space exploration, gardens, and music, became one of the 20th century’s most innovative American painters. Moving from realism to abstraction and expressionism, she found her voice in a mosaic style that celebrated colour theory. Works like Lunar Rendezvous-Circle of Flowers and Apollo 12 “Splash Down” showcase her mastery of light, colour, and rhythm. Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum and have her art in the White House. Her vibrant paintings have left an indelible mark on modern art history.
