Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known simply as Michelangelo, was a child prodigy who became one of history’s most celebrated artists. His first known painting, an adaptation of The Torment of Saint Anthony, was completed around age 12 or 13. He trained in the Medici court in Florence, immersing himself in classical antiquities and the company of poets, philosophers, and artists. Renowned for his physical realism, Michelangelo’s masterpieces include the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Vatican City, with The Creation of Adam illustrating the “divine breath of life.”
