Ellis Rowan (1848-1922) achieved international acclaim, earning 29 medals and admiration from leading art critics. Her works adorned collections of royalty, including Queen Victoria. As a painter, naturalist, writer, and explorer, she traversed remote corners of Australia, India, Europe, America, and New Guinea for nearly 50 years, capturing exotic flora and fauna in her art. Despite the male-dominated scientific illustration field of her time, Rowan left an indelible mark as one of Australia’s most cherished botanical artists. The National Library of Australia houses 919 of her watercolors and gouaches, a fraction of her prolific output.
