Whether we like it or not, 26 January has become a complex day in Australia – one marked by both celebration and deep mourning. While most nations commemorate independence, treaties, or significant historical figures on their national day, Australia uniquely observes the beginning of colonisation of an already inhabited land. Despite widespread recognition of the harm this caused First Nations peoples, the date remains unchanged. Yet, 26 January holds many other stories – funny, tragic, and curious. Perhaps it’s time to reflect with history, humour and humility on what else this day could represent.
